News : Biometric Registration Rollout For GST

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) department's introduction of the biometric registration system in Gujarat is a significant step towards ensuring the legitimacy of GST applicants and preventing fraudulent registrations. This initiative aims to address issues where individuals claimed that their GST registration was completed without their knowledge and consent, often involving the unauthorized use of their bank and identity documents.

The new registration process will require applicants to provide their thumb impressions along with various identification documents, making it nearly impossible for unauthorized registrations to occur. This move is particularly crucial in light of recent cases where individuals with fake identification papers managed to claim input tax credits, leading to financial losses for the government.

The implementation of biometric data-based registration is a proactive measure by the GST department to address these concerns and safeguard the integrity of the GST system. This system will also allow the department to trace and verify individuals in the event of suspicious activities or fraudulent claims, ensuring greater transparency and accountability in the GST registration process.

Notably, the launch event for this system is set to take place in Vapi, and Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman, is expected to inaugurate the project virtually at ten different centers across Gujarat. Following the successful implementation of the pilot project in Gujarat, the plan is to expand this biometric registration system to other states, making it a nationwide effort to enhance the security and reliability of #GST registrations.
